Sustainable Housing Award
Westridge
were winners of the Low Energy Social Housing Project of the Year
for the development at Abbey Walk, Storrington, West Sussex for
Greenoak Housing Association. Other partners in the project were
Jon Broome Architects, Ellis & Moore, AppleyardsDWB and NDesign.
The
scheme provided 12 family homes with 2, 3 & 4 bedrooms which
have been designed to standards in excess of an “excellent”
rating under the BRE environmental friendly features. The design
incorporates high levels of insulation, airtight construction, efficient
heating systems and low energy lighting.
The
award was one of a number of categories organised by Inside Housing
and the Chartered Institute of Housing recognising projects and
organisations at the cutting edge of sustainability best practice.
This
year the trophies were presented by comedian, writer and environmental
campaigner Mark Watson at an event held at London’s Hilton
Hotel.
Sustainability is one of the most pressing issues affecting social
housing sector. Britain’s homes are responsible for 27% of
the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions. This is why all new homes
will have to meet tough new carbon standards by 2016.
